Mount Royal University presently offers 12 four-year baccalaureate degrees with 32 majors, with a view to grow this mix to 15 degrees and 50 majors by 2025. Current degree offerings are unique, and include four-year bachelor degrees in interior design, midwifery, child studies and health and physical education, as well as arts, criminal justice, business administration, communication, computer information systems, education, nursing and science. About the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies
Mount Royal University’s Bissett School of Business, within the Faculty of Business and Communication Studies, is a primary destination for undergraduate students seeking high quality business education. The school employs 100+ faculty, 50 of whom are full-time. The faculty is comprised of a highly motivated group of scholars, who are passionate about teaching while engaged in innovative scholarship. In order to support its objectives, the Bissett School of Business benefits from the associated Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and the Institute for Community Prosperity – making the school unique among Canadian undergraduate business schools. The Department of International Business and Supply Chain Management offers BBA concentrations in Supply Chan Management and International Business. Both programs are built on a foundation of international trade and supply chain understandings, with highly regarded networks into their respective industry and academic communities. These programs are strategic strengths of the business school.
The Department is also home to the business law offerings and quantitative methods. Both of these disciplines are embedded in the core BBA curriculum and viewed as growth opportunities for the Faculty.
About the Role
The Department of International Business, Supply Chain Management and Aviation invites applications for the position of Department Chair, with tenure at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, commencing June 1, 2019, subject to final budgetary approval. The department, which includes 12 full-time faculty, 16 Contract faculty, and an Administrative Assistant, is committed to integrity, diversity, and equality in order to foster an inclusive, safe, and respectful environment.
Responsibilities
In collaboration with department colleagues, the Chair will be expected to provide academic leadership by guiding the future direction of the Department. The Chair will be expected to:
• Maintain and communicate a sense of direction
• Act as a responsible advocate for the Department
• Encourage respect for a range of career paths and different forms and fields of teaching and scholarship
• Provide mentorship to tenure-track and new hires
• Foster values of fairness, excellence, and collaboration
• Maintain a sense of pride, achievement, and community among all members (students, staff, and faculty) of the Department.
In terms of administrative capabilities, the Chair will be expected to:
• Work within the practices and policies of the university including collective agreements
• Be responsible for following and shaping departmental policy to ensure effective, efficient and collegial operation of the Department
• Provide mentorship and direction to individual members of the Department
• Work effectively as a representative on the advisory council to the Dean of Business and Communication Studies
• Ensure that Department interests are well represented in university level initiatives.
The Chair will be expected to offer academic leadership for innovative curriculum development. Promoting student success and advancing scholarship within these two complementary disciplines are the most important mandates of the Chair. MRU is known for its experiential learning with a commitment to co-operative education, community service learning and field schools. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable representing the disciplines with the related professional communities, locally, nationally and internationally.
Qualifications
Credentials require a masters, with strong preference for a PhD and demonstrated leadership experience, preferably as a Chair or equivalent. The academic appointment will be at the Associate or Full Professor rank; therefore, applicants are required to have tenure at a Universities Canada recognized institution.
The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills and an ability to balance strong academic leadership qualities with demonstrated administrative capabilities. Candidates should also demonstrate an understanding of the challenges associated with leading an interdisciplinary department, appreciate the diversity of our community, and exhibit skills as a consensus builder.
