Overview
Long used in the health sciences, the scoping review is increasingly recognized as a valuable methodological tool across a range of disciplines, including finance. This type of literature synthesis is especially useful for exploring an emerging field of research, clarifying vague or divergent concepts, mapping the current state of knowledge, identifying gaps, and guiding future research directions.
This workshop offers a structured introduction to scoping reviews, with an emphasis on their strategic value in finance research projects. It is designed primarily for researchers, graduate students, and professionals in research, teaching, or administration, though the method presented applies readily to other disciplines such as management, economics, social sciences, and public policy. The session will also distinguish scoping reviews from other types of reviews (systematic, narrative), highlighting the specific advantages of this approach in exploratory research contexts.
In this session, participants will learn:
- The PCC framework (Population, Concept, Context) for defining a clear research question
- How to develop a systematic and relevant search strategy
- Rigorous criteria for source selection and data extraction
- How to produce a narrative and visual synthesis of results
- How to integrate digital tools (e.g., Zotero) into the review process
- How scoping reviews can support the structuring of exploratory research, the identification of knowledge gaps, and funding applications
