General Guidelines
Purpose
The purpose of the ASAC Past Presidents’ Research Award is to support a full-time Canadian faculty member. This grant is to encourage high quality research into administrative science issues most pressing in the year of the award. Starting in 2008, and awarded every other year, ASAC will award one grant of $5000 to support research activities. In addition, the award winner will have their ASAC membership and conference fees paid for that year.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the award applicants must: (a) have a PhD degree, (b) be within their first five years of a full-time, tenure track position at a Canadian university at the time of application, (c) be teaching in the areas of administrative sciences, business administration, or other recognizable business discipline. (ASAC reserves the right to forego an award if none of the applications are deemed acceptable for funding or for any other reason at the discretion of the ASAC executive.) The applicants must identify any other sources of funding for their proposed research that have been applied for or received.
Activities Supported
The grant is to be used to support the primary research activities of the faculty member. The grant is to be used for direct research expenses, including but not limited to the following:
- special equipment and supplies for research activities (which become the property of the host university);
- travel expenses to and from research sites;
- survey costs;
- telephone, fax, photocopying or computer charges;
- publication or page charges; and
- conference activity and travel for presentation of research results supported by grant.
The grant may not be used for:
- equipment servicing; or
- basic living expenses;
- or cost-recovery charge backs from universities.
Support is being provided for the direct costs of research. All items must be essential to the conduct of the proposed research and must be justified. Only modest research needs can be met by this program. Applicants must develop their proposed budgets with the limits of the grant funding in mind.
Evaluation Process and Criteria
Applications for the ASAC Past Presidents’ award will be reviewed and adjudicated by the ASAC Award Committee established for the purpose.
Applications will be assessed on the following criteria:
- the quality and originality of the proposal;
- the potential impact of the research on teaching practice or on management practice;
- the importance of the research topic to the administrative sciences community, and
- any special circumstances or other factor(s) deemed appropriate in a particular instance.
In all cases, the overriding factors in the evaluation of an application are the quality and originality of the research, as reflected in the research proposal, and the achievements of the applicant. All decisions are final. ASAC reserves the right not to make an award in a given year if it deems that none of the submissions meet the program’s objectives or for any other reason at the discretion of the ASAC Executive. The ASAC Executive will evaluate the continuance of the program on a year-to-year basis.
Conditions of the Award
Research supported by the ASAC Past Presidents’ Research Award must comply with the host university’s policies on the conduct of research, especially on the university’s policy on research ethics and, where applicable, the university’s policy on the use of human subjects.
It is the responsibility of the applicant to secure the appropriate approval for the research proposed; funds will not be released until proof of all approvals have been submitted. The award recipient is responsible for the appropriate use of the funds and for any over expenditures of research accounts. Expenditures must comply with the host university’s regulations concerning the use of research grant funds and must be made in accordance with the host university’s standard financial procedures. Grants involving the purchase of equipment are made on the understanding that any costs associated with the installation, operation and maintenance of any equipment purchased will be the responsibility of the researcher and his/her department.
Award holders are to acknowledge the assistance of the ASAC Past Presidents’ Research Award in all publications and presentations resulting from this support. Award recipients must attend the conference in order to receive their grant.
